The search for a new fraternity and sorority coordinator begins

Late last week, former Coordinator of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Erin Courville, left her position at UNH to accept a job at Granite State College in Concord, New Hampshire.
According to Memorial Union Building (MUB) Assistant Director David Zamansky,  “It’s really very simplistic.”
“We knew this day would be coming. She saw this position open up at Granite State College, which is 10 minutes from where she lives. We knew she was going to get it,” Zamansky said. “I was one of her references; I could just gush about her.”
“Three to five years is the usual amount of time any one person holds this position,” Zamansky said. He further noted that such turnover time is normal for this position. The beginning of this academic year marked the end of Courville’s third year as the coordinator of fraternity and sorority life.
As to what duties the role of the coordinator of fraternity and sorority life entails, Zamansky said, “As a hall director is in charge of the safety and cohesion of their hall community, the coordinator of fraternity and sorority life oversees and advises the fraternity and sorority community on campus.”
In regard to the immediate future of the position, Zamansky said, “There are probably going to be two to four of us who are taking on different roles while we do a national search for a new fraternity and sorority coordinator.”
For the time being, Zamansky will be the main contact and panel advisor for fraternity and sorority life. He will also attend the weekly presidents’ meetings.
“It will be mix and match but I will be overseeing a lot of it. When a new person is hired they will be reporting to me,” Zamansky said.
Elaborating on the topic of finding a replacement for Courville, he said, “We’re looking for a candidate who has experience in this field of work, preferably experience directly related to fraternity and sorority life. However, it’s a little late in the year because most of the candidates we’re looking for will have already retained a position for the semester. We’re hoping to find someone out there who also started their search process late.”
Zamansky said the application for the position should be ready in November, and that the earliest they might hire someone for the job might be in December.
“Ideally, we’d like to get the new hire in before the end of this semester to get their feet wet and meet everyone so that they’re more prepared at the start of next semester,” he said. “Realistically, we will probably be interviewing candidates on campus in December and have a new hire in place on Jan. 1. We certainly don’t want to rush the process and it would be really tight to have someone hired before the end of the semester.”
Although her colleagues were prepared for this transition, Courville is still leaving a group of friends behind.
“She will be missed,” Zamansky said.
He also said that he hopes the program continues to move forward. “[Courville] did a lot to improve the fraternity and sorority community here,” he said. “We’re hoping to find someone who can handle taking on the work she did and improve it further.”
Other than the division of work, Zamansky does not expect any complications to arise during the process of finding a new coordinator.
