With this very first issue of the academic year, our staff’s collective goal is to grant a sincere welcome to all new members of the University of New Hampshire community. Although I’m presuming this is the first time many of you have held a copy of The New Hampshire, I’m confident that you’ll find this issue helpful during your first days as Wildcats.
In our future issues, we will work our hardest to supply our readers with all the most important information pertaining to UNH and the surrounding communities. However, with so much going on around campus, it’s impossible for us to know about everything that deserves to be covered. With that in mind, please feel free to reach out to us in advance with ideas to pitch that you believe TNH should cover. I can assure you we will welcome your ideas with an open mind.
We as an organization offer all members of the community the opportunity to contribute to this publication. For TNH to succeed as a college newspaper and as a public forum, our staff must be sure to collect as many distinct voices as possible while crafting our bi-weekly issues. One of the first lessons we are taught as student journalists is that a reporter should always interview a diverse range of sources when writing a story.
Given the broadness of material we cover, it doesn’t matter what your specific field of study happens to be; there will most likely always be something of interest that you can report on. Historically, TNH has had a staff comprising students with a variety of majors, and we especially encourage new contributors to add their voices to the mix. With the four main sections –News, Sports, Opinion and Arts– every week offers writers and photographers the chance to widen and add depth to their skillsets.
Getting involved with TNH is as easy as sending an email to an editor (our individual email addresses can be found on the bottom of page 2). Or better yet, stop by the newsroom (MUB room 132) on any given Monday night at 8 p.m. for the contributors’ meeting. At this weekly gathering, we pitch stories for the two issues of that particular week, which anyone is welcome to write. Personally, I consider the choice I made to attend one of these meetings during my first year one of the most influential decisions I’ve made during my college career.
To get started, do yourself a favor and stop by the newsroom during the Jukebox event on Saturday, August 27 from 7-10:30 p.m. in the MUB. We’ll even have some snacks.
