Letter to Sununu: Student leaders address inequity in NH’s vaccination rollout

Durham, NH -- On March 25, Gov. Chris Sununu announced that all New Hampshire residents aged 16 and older would be able to register for the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines starting April 2. However, this policy excluded thousands of out-of-state students who attend universities in New Hampshire and have been calling the Granite State their home for a majority of the past few years.

Earlier this week, University of New Hampshire (UNH) Student Body President Nicholas Fitzgerald and Student Body Vice President Tyler Silverwood signed a letter with other student governments from Dartmouth College and Plymouth State College urging New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu to expand coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine access to out-of-state college students.

The Student Senate at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) began a new chapter in the fall of 2020 following allegations of general misconduct by the Senate members as well as providing a “hostile climate toward women Senators.” With ample leadership experience, political science and history dual-major Nicholas Fitzgerald, a junior at the time, believed that he could lead the organization towards its original purpose: to make decisions that serve the students best.

On Friday, the University of New Hampshire (UNH), and Faculty Senate co-hosted a convocation on free speech, truth and civility. The hour-long zoom presentation and question and answer session were a part of UNH’s wider effort to bring attention to the issues of speech on college campuses and is the first of many similar convocations in the coming weeks.

On Sept. 30, President of the University of New Hampshire (UNH) James Dean, hosted his third town hall this semester regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) on campus. The town hall was joined by Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Nadine Petty and Provost and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Wayne Jones. The event was moderated by Student Body President Nicholas Fitzgerald and law student Michael Fazzi.
