To launch her law enforcement career, longtime Strafford County resident Kathryn Mone became a police officer in Madbury, N.H. during her time as a student at The University of New Hampshire. After that, she worked for the Durham Police Department for 16 years, advancing to the position of sergeant and developing her leadership abilities while attending the FBI National Academy. Upon relocating to the York County Sheriff’s Office in Maine as a major in charge of the security patrols, she first served as chief of police in North Hampton.
“This situation highlighted the urgent need for trusted, transparent leadership in our county’s law enforcement,” Mone said. She reflected on the unpleasant history of the former sheriff, who was charged with major crimes when she decided to enter the race for sheriff.
She was a strong fit for the role given her distinct combination of professional expertise, leadership skills, and a master’s degree from UNH in Public Administration.
Throughout her campaign, Mone made it a commitment to inform the public about the frequently disregarded duties performed by the sheriff’s department.
“Most people do not know what the Sheriff does,” she said, outlining vital functions, including investigations, court security, prisoner transport, police and fire department dispatch services, and civil procedures.
“I hope that during my time as Sheriff, people ask questions and become educated on the role and why it should matter to them,” she said.
Restoring confidence within the justice system and the public at large was her first objective as sheriff.
“Transparency and accountability are key,” Mone said.
In order to improve the welfare of the community, she also hopes to strengthen already-existing programs, like the Special Olympics Torch Run, while also considering unique concepts, like incorporating mental health professionals into law enforcement.
Coming back to serve her local county is more than just a professional accomplishment for Mone; it’s an extremely intimate one.
“While I valued my experience in York County, it reminded me how much I missed serving New Hampshire and being part of the community where I live and am raising my family,” Mone said.
Given Mone’s election, Strafford County approaches a new era, and it is envisioned that her reign will improve the relationship between the police and the citizens it protects. As she undertakes this position, she presents a proposal to the community to join forces with her to promote a culture of involvement, trust, and development.
