Nostalgia in Dr. Seuss

Students will reminisce over the whimsical characters that captured their childhood hearts when Campus Activities Board brings a Dr. Seuss theme to Saturday’s Homecoming.

“We wanted to do a throwback kind of theme,” said co-Homecoming chair Adam Aasen. “We just threw around some ideas, and Dr. Seuss was a must at that point.”

Students seem to like the Dr. Seuss theme.

“It’s going to be really cool, obviously,” sophomore Kenny Arico said. “Dr. Seuss is a part of everyone’s childhood.”

There are many different sub-categories within the theme, such as the classics “Horton Hears A Who!”, “The Lorax,” “The Grinch,” “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” and more.

“There are so many different aspects of it compared to another theme where you have to go with just one thing,” Aasen said. “That was the selling point.”

Dining’s involvement

Students will kick off Homecoming at the dining halls with Dr. Seuss-themed treats and entrees such as the Dr. Seuss-themed dessert bar where students will be able to decorate their own cupcakes. Holloway Commons started featuring Dr. Seuss-themed desserts as early as Thursday night.

Students will be able eat at a barbecue provided by UNH Dining on Friday evening, see live entertainment from the different student groups on campus or just chat and hang around the bonfire at 6 p.m., which is sponsored by SCOPE.

Activities to expect

Friday, a scavenger hunt will be held. Students will be able to find out all the places they’ll go by following the fun rhymes given to them by CAB around campus.

“We’re going to be giving out raffle tickets for a raffle that we’re having down at Boulder Field for peo–ple who participate in the ‘All the Places You’ll Go’ scavenger hunt,” Homecoming co-chair Emily Kwesell said.

All the clues for the scavenger hunt will be put out via social media sites, Kwesell said, such as Facebook, Twitter and possibly Instagram that will give hints with pictures.

Going along with the Homecoming traditions, the annual cookout at Boulder Field is at 5 p.m.

Hot dogs, hamburgers and other foods will be hot off the grill while students watch a variety of performers such as Sisters In Step, EDMC, Sketched Out and some of the a cappella groups such as Alabaster Blue. Performances start at 5:30 p.m.

“There will be performances all the way up until 8 [p.m.],” Aasen said.

Students will get free T-shirts starting at 5 p.m. Students will also be able to engage in fun activities that go along with the Dr. Seuss theme, like a version of “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.”

“It’s kind of like the kid’s fishing pole game you see at carnivals where you try and get the ring off the bottle,” Kwesell said. “But we’re trying to make it so you’re fishing for fish, to go with the book ‘One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.’”

The Residence Hall Association will also be having “hop on popcorn” and “Truffula trees” cotton candy to go along with the spirit and theme of ‘Cats in the Hat Homecoming.

CAB is ending the fun at Boulder Field with fireworks starting after the bonfire and live entertainment.

However, the fun and festivities continue at the Memorial Union Building at 9 p.m. in the Granite State Room with more entertainment from a musical comedy improvisation group that includes some UNH alumni. Improv Anonymous will be opening for them.

Saturday morning, students will be able to continue with the celebration at the Homecoming Parade starting at 11 a.m. at Quad Way through the back of campus.

“It’s the same route as always,” Aasen said. “It follows all the way down to the football field before the game at 3:30.”

The parade will feature floats from numerous student organizations, community members and other local businesses. Aasen said he is really excited about CAB’s float in the parade.

“We tried to have it feature as many Dr. Seuss characters as possible,” Aasen said. “I can’t wait for the big reveal.”

The Game

All of this excitement leads up to the football game at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday between UNH and William & Mary.

According to UNH Athletics staff, Saturday’s UNH Homecoming game is a matchup of Top 10 teams, both of whom have won four consecutive games to improve to 4-1 overall. No. 4/6 UNH is 2-0 in the CAA while No. 10/11 William & Mary is 1-0.

So far, the Wildcats have outscored the opposition.

“UNH is 2-0 at home this season and has outscored the opposition 97-46, including 60-16 in the first half. The Wildcats have won eight consecutive homes games at Cowell Stadium,” UNH Athletics staff said.

Past Homecomings have been favorable to the Wildcats. Their winning streak began several years ago.

The Wildcats’ Homecoming win streak started in 2009 with a win over No. 2 ranked Villanova.

Since then, they’ve gone on to beat Richmond and Rhode Island twice and look to extend the streak to six games against William & Mary.
