When you think of UNH hockey, what is the first name that pops into your head? Chances are, it is head coach Dick Umile, who has been the face of Wildcats men’s hockey since 1990.

For the last quarter of a century, the UNH Field Hockey program has been led by one of their own. Robin Balducci has left her mark not only as a head coach, but as a former player, mentor and teacher. Through the successful years of postseason runs, coaching awards, achievements and accomplishments, Balducci looks to give back to her alma mater.
Elinor Purrier continued to establish herself as one of the most impressive athletes UNH has ever seen after her performance in Providence this weekend.
On Saturday, UNH and Stony Brook, two of the top teams in the America East conference went to battle. As this year’s NBA regular season winds down, the game will say goodbye to one of its all-time greats. Kobe Bryant will retire at the end of this season after 20 years playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. It marks the end of one of the most productive and incredible careers in recent memory. But as I begin to think back on Bryant’s career, I wonder what his lasting legacy will be after he leaves the game for good.
The Wildcats’ three-game win streak was snapped as the Boston University Terriers handed them a 14-7 loss Wednesday night in Boston, Massachusetts. UNH’s overall record drops to 6-7 with just three games remaining in the regular season.
While the rest of the UNH men’s hockey team laces up their skates and prepares to take the ice, one player is chewing on Tums and calming his nerves. Sophomore defenseman Richard Boyd has Crohn’s disease and must take certain precautions before games to prevent flare-ups.

On Saturday, the Wildcats hosted the University of Vermont Catamounts in the ‘All ‘Cats Wear Pink’ game under the lights at Cowell Stadium. In the end, Wildcat senior captains Nicole Grote and Laura McHoul shined the brightest as both players eclipsed century milestones, and led their team to a 12-9 victory over Vermont, the first time UNH has beaten UVM since 2010.
The year is 1996 and the Michael-Jordan-led Chicago Bulls, had just beaten the Seattle Supersonics, led by Gary Payton in the NBA Finals. The team with Hall of Famers Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and of course Michael Jordan capped off a 72-10 campaign, a record for wins in a season, that concluded with a championship. From that point on, many considered the 1995-1996 Bulls the greatest to ever step foot on an NBA court. However, I have a question. What about this year’s Golden State Warriors?
“When I came in there was just one side court, [Lundholm] didn’t have the main court or the other courts. I think there were about 10 volleyballs and one set of uniforms,” UNH’s head volleyball coach Jill Hirschinger said, reminiscing about her first days with the program.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with the head coach of the men’s cross-country and track and field programs Jim Boulanger, this past Tuesday, and as athletes slowly trickled in to the Paul Sweet Oval for track practice, I was able to learn why he coaches and how he has done this for so long.
The weekend proved to be a busy one for the ‘Cats as they kicked off their outdoor season with a bang. Both teams split up and sent a few athletes to the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Virginia, while the bulk of the teams competed at the tri-meet against Bates College and the University of Maine at the Maine campus.
For the first time this season, the Wildcats have a winning streak.
The Wildcats’ season came to a close Saturday night after a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Regional Championship in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In North American sports, one can associate the start of a season with the beginning of a particular sport. Fall has football and winter has hockey and basketball, depending on the type of person you ask. What about spring and summer? Is it golf or soccer? Wait I got it, I think it’s this sport called baseball?
The 2016 fall soccer season is still a few months away, but the Wildcats are already gearing up for competition.
After a tough road stretch, it did not take long for the Wildcats to bounce back at home.
A step in the right direction.
