Directing a musical production. Starting a job somewhere new. Being an educator during a pandemic. All three of these things by themselves are challenges, but add all of these situations together and it may seem like an all-too-daunting undertaking. That is unless you’re Tom Alsip, the new assistant professor for the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Theater Department and this year’s director of the university’s mainstage show “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.”

Farinas takes flight: local artist shares his inspiration

Aubrey Benoit, Arts Editor March 4, 2021
[DURHAM]-- Ryan Farinas, 22, and his band “BLANCO” performed at The Big Bean in Durham, New Hampshire (NH) two Saturdays ago. Farinas takes on the role of lead singer, Shane Jozitis on drums, Kai Dimuzio on bass, Matt Oriente on saxophone and Thomas Williams on guitar. Filling up the capacity of 70 people in a COVID-safe environment, his show was a hit to say the least. Hitting almost 30,000 streams on Spotify alone for his single “I Wanna Die in Hawaii” illuminates the talent Farinas exudes as a young and emerging artist.

UNH student provides creative winter apparel options

Cassie Hollasch February 25, 2021
It’s no surprise that the winter in New Hampshire is cold, too cold for some even. Combining that with the longer duration of the cold weather in New Hampshire compared to other states, winter jackets become the main apparel in everyday wear. For the stylish individuals, this means that your outfit often gets covered, hiding your creative form of self-expression.

[DURHAM]— Feb. 17 was National Kindness Day, making this past week an opportunity for people to spread kindness. I decided to go out of my way to spread kindness to those around me and encouraged my friends and peers at The University of New Hampshire (UNH) to do the same.

It has been almost a year since life as we’ve known it, including the ways we socialize with one another, has been changed by COVID-19. Even though some of these challenges have been alleviated thanks to safety measures taken at UNH allowing students to experience some normalcy, challenges such as rising cases, winter weather limiting time outdoors, and the overall state of the country still make socializing with friends difficult. Difficult, but not impossible.

I had the opportunity to talk with Craig Hill about his current exhibit, Clusters, on display at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth. The eclectic mélange of comic, collage and culture is a trip.

The Show Must Go On: Mask and Dagger’s Tartuffe

Cassie Hollasch February 17, 2021
When the University of New Hampshire (UNH) went into Orange Mode of operations last Thursday afternoon in response to the rise of COVID-19 cases on its Durham campus, UNH’s resident drama club Mask and Dagger was faced with the difficult decision of canceling live performances of “Tartuffe”, their first show of the semester. However, quick-thinking, coordination, and flexibility managed to save the show.

Best & worst Super Bowl advertisements

Best & worst Super Bowl advertisements

Hannah Donahue February 11, 2021
The Super Bowl is made up of two audiences – one that watches it for the football game, and one that watches it for the ads. I know that personally, I am part of the latter group. I watch the Super Bowl every year for the commercials, and I will openly admit that I always have no clue what is going on in a football game. With lots of ads out there from the Super Bowl, I’ll keep it short and give you my top three favorite commercials from the big game and my bottom three that missed the mark.
Feel-good films about self-love

Feel-good films about self-love

Cassie Hollasch February 11, 2021
Valentine’s Day often is a mixed box of chocolates for a lot of folks. For both partnered people and single people alike, Valentine’s Day is a feel-good time despite the coldness of February. But for others, well, the holiday can be a struggle. And after almost a full year of everyone having to limit their contact with other people, the love-centric holiday may be all the more bittersweet. However, love isn’t just romantic or even solely platonic. With the stress of daily life as well as pandemic life, self-love may be more important than ever.
