On Thursday, Apr. 3, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in Huddleston Hall, the University of New Hampshire Hamel Honors and Scholars College hosted “Honoring Our Artists”, a reception celebrating the artists and work that is on display. Many of the artists featured are alumni, faculty or staff, and community members.
The event featured lively conversation and refreshments, along with remarks from Catherine Peebles, Director of the Honors College, and Katherine Gaudet, associate director of the Honors College. Both speakers spoke of their gratitude for the attendees, the staff, and the artists, as well as the donors who made the renovation and transformation of the Honors College possible.
Director Peebles also announced that the Honors College will be participating in the 603 Challenge this year, aiming to reach 50 donors. Other honors staff responsible for the organization and execution of this event include Emily Schoonmaker, Daphne Chevalier, Rachel Nott, Andrew Ferris, and Kanan Kalke.
Among the featured artists was alumnus Christopher Volpe ‘96, with his piece entitled “Jewel Tide.” Vlope earned a Master’s degree in poetry at UNH, and now owns an art studio with his wife. Volpe said he was unaware that the Honors College had purchased his work until he received an invitation to the reception.
“I never left the area, and I have fond memories of UNH. It’s cool to be back and making connections again,” said Volpe.
Alumnus Daniel Faiella ‘19 created his piece “Mount Washington, Evening After a Storm” specifically for Huddleston Hall. Faiella, a former Hamel Scholar, was able to choose the space where his work would be displayed and design the piece for that space: “I wound up actually coming into the space as the renovations were still underway,” said Faiella, “They asked me to look at places I thought might be good…I got to pick my spot, which is pretty awesome.”
Faiella and Volpe are among many artists, community members, and alumni whose work, past and present, is on display in the Honors College.
Following the speaking program, attendees were invited to stroll through the halls of Huddleston Hall and view the work on display, mingling with each other and the artists.
The featured works are on permanent display at Huddleston Hall.
