It’s official: Spring has arrived. The change of season is finally here, which means it is time for a new you and a fresh start. The fashion scene is making way for brand-new trends and a completely different look. With the start of an entirely new season, it is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe and keep appearances similar to your growing personality and sense of style.
Spring is the season of new beginnings. With flowers blooming and animals awakening, the earth seems to come back to life. Homeowners and gardeners plant their seeds and temperatures begin to rise. As the spring season sets in, the earth looks beautiful and rejuvenating. The trees turn over new leaves and nature starts to look inviting.
With just under 13,000 undergraduate students here at the University of New Hampshire, students feel compelled to keep up with the latest fashion trends. As temperatures are rising and the sun is finally coming out, students are ready to put away their heavy winter coats, fleeces and sweaters and put on their denim shorts, cardigans, light scarves and sandals after the recent long and brutal winter.
“This season is all about the baby bell-bottoms, differing from the smooth fit of the past year’s skinny jean, 2015 is all about a fittingly modernized flare at the leg,” junior Kate Bruning said. “This look combines the custom-made cut of the skinny leg with the fun and flirty flare of a wide-legged pant.”
According to Vogue, “A cuff is no longer just a cuff, a flare is no longer just a flare: Now it’s cropped above the ankle, say, embellished with sparkly eyelash fringe.”
The “fringe” is another noticeable trend hitting the streets of Durham. Students walking on campus can be found wearing clothing with this decorative edge made of hanging strings of fabric.
“Not only is this trend stylish and feminine, but the fringe also brings a sense of edgy style to practically any outfit,” said UNH student Grace Peters. “Varying from clothing apparel to accessories one can spot fringe anywhere.”
Vogue says, “We’re in the midst of an incredibly fun and adventurous denim moment, when anything—from shredded to dark-wash, low-slung or high-waisted, and even patched or bedazzled—goes.”
While overalls have been out of style since the 1980s and 1990s, they have recently made a comeback.
“Just the other day in class I saw this girl wearing denim overalls with a black and white striped long sleeve underneath,” junior Kimberly White said. “I never thought overalls would be acceptable again, but the girl looked casual, comfortable and cute, so I guess they’re back in.”
“Back in the day, it was our parents who wore overalls,” said junior Jill Barrett. “I never would have imagined myself wanting to go out and buy my own pair.”
This spring it looks like the ‘90s are making a comeback, keep your eye on the lookout, UNH.
