The University of New Hampshire’s Whittemore Center Arena and the Portsmouth Music Hall are collaborating to introduce highly acclaimed artists to the Seacoast, debuting with a show by The Avett Brothers on May 1, 2025. The partnership combines the Music Hall’s experience in putting on live performances with UNH’s large stadium facilities.
According to Tina Sawtelle, president and CEO of The Music Hall, “This partnership evolved naturally from a shared mission to enhance arts and cultural experiences in our community. We saw an incredible opportunity to bring top-tier talent to a larger audience while strengthening the connection between the university and the broader cultural community.”
For major performances that surpass the Music Hall’s historic downtown Portsmouth theater capacity, the Whittemore Center, which is well-known for hosting sporting events and concerts, is a suitable venue. The partnership benefits both parties, according to UNH Athletic Director Allison Rich.
“Some artists and shows can command a larger audience than their venue can provide. It’s a win-win scenario for us to host these events, bringing positive attention and revenue to both organizations and the community,” said Rich.
The Avett Brothers concert, the partnership’s first event, has already generated excitement. “The response has been incredible. This collaboration demonstrates the potential to create unforgettable experiences that energize the region,” Sawtelle said.
Both organizations have high ambitions for the future beyond this initial event. While Sawtelle stressed the larger goal to incorporate UNH students through internships and other opportunities, Rich pointed out that conversations are already in progress for more concerts and activities.
“This partnership invigorates both organizations and creates greater access to live entertainment for students, residents, and visitors alike,” said Sawtelle.
An exciting new chapter for UNH, the Music Hall, and the Seacoast arts community begins May 1 at 8:00 p.m. with The Avett Brothers’ performance. Tickets are currently on sale for those who wish to attend.
