Durham N.H- The University of New Hampshire (UNH) Wildcats (5-4-2, 2-1-1) just finished games three and four of an eight-game stretch of American East opponents with games this past weekend with games vs UMass Lowell (1-4-5 1-1-1) and Albany (3-6-2 0-2-2).
The first game vs UMass Lowell was a tightly contested battle, ending in a 0-0 draw. The Redhawks opened the game strong, as they were able to record the first three shot attempts of the game. Two of which were saved by the Wildcats sophomore goaltender Sally Rainey.
The Wildcat offense was not able to get much going during the first half but came out strong in the second. UNH recorded five shots in a six-minute span, including some great chances off corner kicks. Unfortunately for the ‘Cats, they could not capitalize and finish the offensive frenzy with a goal and did not record a shot on goal for the rest of the half.
The Wildcats star of the game was Rainey who would record her second shutout in a row after a 7 save performance, including one in the final minutes to ensure the ‘Cats would gain at least one point from the match.
The second game of the weekend against UAlbany would end in a 2-1 victory. After falling behind 1-0 in the first half following a goal by sophomore forward Madison Hnis. The ‘Cats were able to tie the game following a goal from junior forward Meghan Guarente after an assist from junior Chloe Delyser.
UNH would strike again just five minutes after a goal from senior midfielder Megan Logue and a Meghan Guarente assist. At the end of the day, they were able to hang on to win the game and boost themselves to third place in the American East conference.
The Wildcats next game will be Thursday, October 12th at 6 p.m. at Virtue Field in Burlington, Vermont.
